Deism was a philosophical belief that was widely accepted by the colonial intelligentsia at the time of the American Revolution. Its major tenets included belief in human reason as a reliable means of solving social & political problems and belief in a supreme deity who created the universe to operate solely by natural laws. The supreme God of the Deists removed himself entirely from the universe after creating it... They believed that he assumed no control over it, exerted no influence on natural phenomena, and gave no supernatural revelation to man. A necessary consequence of these beliefs was a rejection of many doctrines central to the Christian religion. Deists did not believe in the virgin birth, divinity, or resurrection of Jesus, the efficacy of prayer, the miracles of the Bible, or even the divine inspiration of the Bible.
This is why many of us fight so hard to keep modern religion and politics separate.

I don't hate the christian god as i tell my mamas family, i simply dismiss it.
Stephen Roberts once said "I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours." And this is one moral i follow constantly when i find myself in such predicaments with bible lovers.
To me the bible is tripe for the most part. Quite a few good rules to live by, but quite a lot of bad rules as well. There are better documents to use for guidance. The Constitution of the United States is one glaring example of something that I consider morally and ethically superior to that 2000 year old hodgepodge of mysticism and philosophy.
That was my point entirely. I find the christian bible to be very much so flawed work. There's so much bad and nonsense mixed in with the good it's not worth looking at in my opinion... I'll take my personal judgment over that any day.
